The Ultima is not a kit car; it may be delivered to the customer in component form but there is a world of
difference between this car and the majority of its competitors. More accurately, the Ultima is a
professionally designed sports car that benefits from the modern advances in mid engined technology but which embodies a
sophisticated basic lay out that allows it to be offered in easily assembled component packages.
More important, it can be built using all new compatible components
to deliver the highest standards of performance and safety.

 

 

But of course, it didn't reach this state of engineering excellence overnight. The Ultima can lay claim to a design and performance pedigree going back 18 years to the original car that almost immediately captured the kit car Group
K racing championship in the hands of Lee Noble. Since then, the chassis and mechanical package has been expertly and systematically developed taking further race and championship victories along the way.

'Race proven' is a much abused term where sports cars are concerned but,
in respect of the Ultima, it is not only true, it shows.

 

The Ultima GTR and Can-Am are specifically designed and built as road going sports cars. The chassis is virtually identical to that which shattered the opposition to take its racing championships; a full spaceframe in steel
tube that provides the necessary rigidity  for optimum handling and road holding from the fully adjustable double wishbone
suspension. It is light yet incorporates a full range of safety features creating a central passenger cell that provides maximum
protection from accident impact. There are deformable crumple zones at the front
and rear with 12" wide collapsible sill sections at either side. The twin foam
filled fuel tanks are mounted centrally out of harm's way, the occupants are secured
by six point seat beltharnesses and there
is a full 3.2mm CDS tube RAC specification roll over bar. Such is the strength of the structure that the same chassis whether is fitting a 364 HP  AUDI V8 engine or a race tuned 600 HP.

There is a great deal more to the Can-Am than a mere roof chopped GTR. Indeed, converting enclosed cars
to Can-Am bodywork is an exacting task requiring great styling skill to maintain proportion and line and in this respect, the Ultima Can-Am is outstandingly successful, representing a
classic blend of form and function.
 
Alternative in body style, it s also alternative in concept being Ultima Sports Cars' interpretation of the modern day classic Cobra. Such replicas are undoubtedly wonderful and evocative machines, but today, capable drivers will soon weary of the performance limitations of old design
and outdated components; the Ultima Can-Am is several steps up the

 

performance ladder.
 
Vertically hinged doors grant practical ease of access to the purposeful interior where the driver can experience the same driving thrill as offered by the GTR but with additional dimension; the open air.
 
On the road, the sheer exhilaration of the howling slipstream combines with the
car's power and poise to deliver an exclusive level of thrills that normally carry
a very expensive price tag.
 
But the Can-Am is nothing if not affordable and exclusivity comes a standard along with a full carbon fibre double element rear wing that reflects the technical excellence of the car.

The GTR is the fully enclosed version of the Ultima, the effective teardrop roof section accentuating the flowing lines and adding to the composite body's
aerodynamic efficiency. The double hinged doors open at right angles to the body to allow unrestricted access to the enclosed cockpit. Slide into the driving seat and it feels every inch the true
performance sports car. All controls are perfectly placed for ease and efficiency of operation and the total absence of unnecessary frills creates an immediate 'feel' for the car and a total appreciation of its purpose. Through the steeply raked
screen, your vision is channelled between the beautifully sculpted front
wings down the road ahead and the urge to drive is strong.

 

But unlike many such cars, the Ultima does not intimidate.  Where some supercars are race cars with lavish interior trim, the specific road going design of the Ultima quickly creates the confidence and control to drive it thereby providing the true rewards of ownership.
 
The ride is pleasingly firm, the steering direct and precise without being at all
nervous, the brakes give instant response and the smooth pedal action and
superlative gearchange all put the driver fully in touch with every phase of the
car's progress. This taut feel provides a dramatic change from conventional cars that do their best to insulate the driver from the road.
 
In short the GTR provides purpose without pretence.
